Know Your Rights

Union Millwright's
Brother's and Sister's:
"KNOW YOUR RIGHTS"
The Weingarten Doctrine: "Under the Supreme Courts 1975 Weingarten decision
- An employee has a right to Union Representation during an investigatory
interview that he/she reasonably believes may result in disciplinary action.
The employee must make a clear request for Union Representation and the
employer may grant the request, deny the request and abandon the interview,
or allow the employee to choose between continuing the interview without
Union Representation, or ending the interview. The employer may not legally
deny the request and continue to ask questions.

Early Millwrights
Early Millwrights
The word "millwright" has long been used to describe the man who was marked by everything ingenious and skillful.
For several centuries in England and Scotland the millwright was recognized as a man with a knowledge of carpentry, blacksmithing and lathe work in addition to the fitter and erector.
He was the recognized representative of mechanical arts and was looked upon as the authority in all applications of winds and water, under whatever conditions they were to be used, as a motive power for the purpose of manufacture.
In other words, as the above definition would indicate,
he was the area engineer, a kind of jack of all trades who was equally comfortable at the lathe, the anvil or the carpenter's bench.
Thus, the millwright of the last several centuries was an itinerant engineer and mechanic of high reputation and recognized abilities.
He could handle the axe, the hammer and the plane with equal skill and precision.
He could turn, bore or forge with the ease and ability of one brought up in those trades.
He could set and cut in the furrows of a millstone with an accuracy equal to or superior to that of the miller himself.
In most instances, the millwright was a fair arithmetician, knew something of geometry, leveling and measurements, and often possessed a very competent knowledge of practical mathematics.
He could calculate the velocities, strength and power of machines; could draw in plans, construct buildings, conduits or watercourses, in all the forms and under all the conditions required in his professional practice.
He could build bridges, cut canals and perform a variety of work now done by civil engineers.
In the early days of North America millwrights designed and constructed the mills where flour and grist were ground by water power.
Water was directed over hand-constructed wooden mill wheels to turn big wooden gears and generate power.
Millwrights executed every type of engineering operation in the construction of these mills.
The introduction of the steam engine, and the rapidity with which it created new trades, proved a heavy blow to the distinctive position of the millwrights,
by bringing into the field a new class of competitors in the form of turners, fitters, machine makers, and mechanical engineers.
Although there was an extension of the demand for millwork, it nevertheless lowered the profession of the millwright, and leveled it to a great degree with that of the ordinary mechanic.
It was originally the custom for the millwrights to have meetings for themselves in every shop.
These meetings usually included long discussions of practical science and the principles of construction which more often than not ended in a quarrel.
One benefit of these meetings was the imparting of knowledge, as young aspirants would frequently become excited by the illustrations and chalk diagrams by which each side supported their arguments.

Reality of the Republican definition of 'Capitalism'
Reality of the Republican definition of 'Capitalism'
This is a country where millions of people have no healthcare. The infant mortality rate is worse than in many "third-world" countries, and there is no safety net for the elderly and disabled such as Social Security. Millions of people are thrown out of their homes while the government spends over a trillion dollars of the taxpayers money (YOUR money) to bail out the huge banks and financial institutions that caused all those foreclosures, and caused the markets to crash with their insatiable greed.
Tax cuts go to the richest 5% of the population who don't need it. There is no minimum wage, and giant corporations are given billions of dollars in tax breaks and "incentives" even as they ship jobs overseas where cheap slave-labor is permitted, and devise schemes to avoid paying their fair share of property taxes. Employers are allowed to discriminate against women and racial minorities in their hiring practices and wage scales. There is no such thing as "overtime pay." There are no basic safety regulations to protect workers and the public.
Republicans derogatively label 'Socialism':
This is a country in which the rich pay their fair share. Everybody has healthcare. The young and the old have shelter, heat and enough food to eat. Corporations and the financial system are regulated by common sense rules that protect their workers and the public, and ensure fair wages and prevent discrimination. Businesses that create jobs here instead of using cheap foreign labor get preferential treatment. Corporations have much less political influence in Washington, and the interests of citizens is paramount.

Union People
Union People
The working union people of this country are an amazing lot. Against all odds, they will walk off their jobs and strike, enduring significant hardships sometimes for months or even years – and why? To protect future generations of workers - and to preserve elusive concepts like “dignity” and “respect.” The generosity of the American working class and their willingness to help others is downright awe-inspiring. We just keep on trying.

President Bush
Last Month of Term
Reporter--Mr Bush, there's been a lot of talk on the subject of outsourcing, and the effect it's had on US jobs. Do you have any thoughts on this?
President Bush--Well, I would allow my Secretary of Labor to answer this question himself. However, he is currently at our new Labor Department headquarters in Bangalor India, and will be back sometime next week.

Are you under the impression that the purpose of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was to support American business? If you are, we were both mistaken. The Chamber has joined forces with Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to oppose the “Buy American” provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Time to put America back to work. With well paying jobs!!! Call it protectionism if you want, but it is time to scrap NAFTA and the other trade agreements and negotiate better ones, time to put tariffs on some imported goods and time to STOP trading with China (they devalue their currency unfairly & don't have any environmental or worker protections). Our "Wal-Mart" attitude is killing us... it is all very shortsighted!
These Free Market policies are the ones that are killing us all!
Free Market means... We have to be paid 3rd world wages.
I want my tax money going to buying goods MADE IN THE U.S.A.

I am for ANY program to find out who is stealing our identification, who is working in our country illegally and we need to deport their whole families. There are more than 30 million illegal aliens in our country - something has to be done. They are sucking the life out of our existence

I did not vote for our President Obama and I do not know if he will be any better than President Bush. They are both politicians. Only time will tell...
I do know that the recession started during the last three years of President Bush's administration. Which lead to the loss of jobs, which lead to loss of homes and property. This has also continued thru President Obama's administration.

Jobs
People across the country are angry – for good reason. Corporate greed and Wall Street recklessness drove our economy into a crisis. Sky high unemployment has created a state of emergency – but political leaders in Washington D.C. have not yet offered a real solution to this crisis, while Wall Street and corporate exec...utives are trying to block a recovery for the rest of us and go back to business as usual.
